AmberPoint's Paul Butterworth Named a "Top Innovator'' by Red Herring

Technology Visionary Honored for Lifetime of Successful Innovations

Oakland, California, August 19, 2002 -- Web services management software pioneer, AmberPointTM, Inc., today announced that Red Herring magazine named its co-founder and chief technology officer, Paul Butterworth, one of the "Top Innovators" of 2002. This honor recognizes innovative executives who have made breakthrough contributions to their companies and the information technology industry in general.

Red Herring's annual Top Innovators feature honors executives who best represent the pioneering spirit with their ability to transform existing markets and sometimes create entirely new ones. Honorees are not only innovators, but are also serial entrepreneurs with viable business plans to support their groundbreaking technologies. Butterworth's latest entrepreneurial success, AmberPoint, provides enterprise software for deploying and managing production-ready Web services.

"Paul has repeatedly launched new technologies that were ahead of the market, establishing him as a true leader in the software industry," said Promod Haque, managing partner at Norwest Venture Partners, a lead AmberPoint investor. "Paul is shaping the industry once again with AmberPoint, a company delivering software that enables enterprises to realize the promise of Web services today. He has had tremendous impact on organizations that have affected the broader IT community."

Butterworth is a noted technology visionary with more than 25 years of experience leading high-technology industry innovation. During his career he has led the development of three successive computing paradigms. First, Butterworth developed one of the earliest commercial relational database management systems while serving as chief architect at Ingres Corporation. He later paved the way for commercial distributed object-oriented development systems as co-founder of Forte Software, Inc., which was later acquired by Sun Microsystems. Today, his vision for application management and integration is driving AmberPoint's leading-edge Web services software.

"Innovators have always been heroes to Red Herring," said Blaise Zerega, editor of Red Herring magazine. "Unlike other publications that produce similar lists, Red Herring chooses top-notch engineers, software developers and scientists who have distinguished themselves with a combination of technical creativity and business acumen. In fact, this year's list averages seven patents and three startups per individual. All told, the people on the list have produced $17 billion in wealth and nearly 9,000 jobs."

Butterworth is profiled in the Top Innovators feature in the September 2002 issue of Red Herring and online at www.redherring.com.
