Survey Indicates High Levels of Maturity and Success for Deployed SOA Systems

SOA Adoption Survey Also Points to Heterogeneous Nature of SOA Environments, Including Many "Non-SOA" Components

Oakland, CA, January 22, 2008 -- AmberPoint today announced the results of its State of SOA Adoption Survey, which the company conducted to gauge the use of SOA in the enterprise. The research revealed a healthy success rate for SOA as well as notable heterogeneity in SOA environments. According to the survey, SOA applications are most often implemented to solve integration issues, most production SOA systems span multiple departments and the majority of organizations that have deployed SOA applications are meeting their desired goals.

330 IT professionals with an understanding for SOA concepts and methodologies participated in the State of SOA Adoption Survey. The research paints a picture of SOA in the enterprise that is more mature and successful than previous studies have indicated. For example, while 40% of the respondents have SOA-based applications in production, relatively few of these production systems are standalone, single-department systems.

Survey Results
Results from the survey indicate that while many organizations are still in the early stages of SOA adoption, those companies that have deployed SOA-based applications have met with success.

  • Successful SOA Deployments: Of respondents who have deployed SOA applications, only 1.5% stated that the resulting systems are "not successful." 38% reported that they met all of their project goals, while 60% expressed they met most of their goals.

  • Mature SOA Systems: 53% of deployed SOA applications span multiple departments, while more than 25% have extended their SOA applications to external users, such as partners and customers. Only 20% of deployed SOA applications are "single department" systems.

  • Cross Platform: 72% of respondents have SOA environments that involve platforms (application servers, enterprise service buses, process managers, etc.) from multiple vendors.

  • More than Just Web Services: Nearly all SOA systems include "non-SOA" components. For example, 58% of enterprises include "non-SOAP" messaging (such as MQ or RMI) in their SOA systems. Packaged applications such as SAP are included in 68% of SOA systems, and 47% of SOA environments include mainframes.

  • Scalable Systems: Nearly half of the respondents with deployed SOA applications have more than 26 components in their SOA systems, 18% have more than 100 components and 10% have more than 250. Success rates were high for even large-scale SOA systems.

"Companies that are looking to move forward with SOA stand a good chance of being successful," said Gordon Loudon, Vice President of Customer Experience at AmberPoint. "This survey validates what we’re seeing with our customers—that there are many large-scale implementations and that they’re delivering results. The technology and products are mature enough to solve earlier barriers to adoption. SOA isn’t easy. In a real-world implementation SOA is a complex effort but many enterprises are making it work with great success."
